How do I detox after the Christmas holidays?

Most people associate the word detox with a strict juice cleanse or impossible fast but it doesn't have to be this way. Your health choices don't have to be extreme in order to work since your bodies are made to flush out toxins on their own. Cleansing can simply be helping your body filter and process by eating the right foods or drinking enough water to help digestion release unwanted leftovers from your system.

Here are 6 healthy habits that will help you detox your body naturally (can I get a hurray for no deprivation required):

1. Eat anti-inflammatory foods

How do you keep that body clean? By eating whole foods packed with nutrients! Fiber-rich foods, such as fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, lean protein and probiotics can help your gut and liver remove any unwanted buildup in your system. To yield even better results, try to reduce processed, fried and sugary foods, as well as, red meat from your diet.

2. Drink...water of course

Water will help hydrate your body which will help your kidneys flush out toxins. Adding lemon is also a great way to go and adds a little bit of flavour. The citrus may signal the liver to produce more enzymes, which can keep digestion moving smoothly. You can also switch to tea if you don't particularly enjoy plain water! Green tea has been shown to protect against heart disease and cancer which can be another bonus.

3. Move

Sweating can help you detox by boosting circulation throughout your body and helping you get rid of those extra toxins. Also, exercise is known to reduce stress, as well as, increase happiness and energy.

4. Eat smaller portions...and slowly

Big meals usually bring on bloating which forces your digestive system to work overtime. By eating less but more frequently, you avoid gulping in air while your devouring your food.

5. Treat your skin right

Your skin responds immediately to how you eat and how you treat it on a daily basis. By dry-brushing your skin with a soft brush before your bath or shower, you exfoliate it which boosts circulation and promotes new cell growth.

6. Sleep

Your body needs to rest, recover and recuperate in order to function properly, which is why sleeping is key to keep your health on track. Make sure you can rest soundly by keeping your bedroom cool, dark and quiet. Also, your target should be minimum 7 hours of sleep nightly as sufficient rest will help reduce stress and inflammation.
